ES 96 - Engineering Problem Solving and Design

As part of my engineering curriculum, all engineers work with a client for a semester to solve a problem using engineering design. We worked with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Global Health Initiative to identify engineering solutions that could reduce global unequal access to paediatric oncology care and associated disparities in outcomes.

Through a process of investigation and ideation, where the team spent six weeks collecting and synthesising both qualitative and quantitive data through in-person interviews and secondary research, we identified a problem we could tackle. Namely, the communication, collection and interpretation of patient data. By narrowing down a large set of ideas through several criteria, we decided to develop a paediatric vital sign monitor.

I served as the Technical Lead of the Data Communication team. We were tasked with designing and testing the wireless communication system that the monitor would use to transmit data, as well as the electronics for the project. In addition to managing the team, I took charge in PCB development in Eagle.
